What is SUM?
SUM is a program offered to banks and credit unions and administered by NYCE Payments Network, LLC, a Metavante company. NYCE is a leading electronic payments network that enables ATM and debit card access for the customers of its financial institution clients. Cardholders of financial institutions that have joined NYCE's SUM Program can make withdrawals at designated ATMs owned by other SUM Program members without paying a surcharge.
What is a surcharge? A service fee?
A surcharge is a fee, charged by the ATM owner, that appears on your ATM receipt when you perform a transaction such as a cash withdrawal. This is the fee you avoid by using SUM ATMs.
Surcharge fees are different from service fees. A service fee appears only on your account statement, and not on your ATM receipt, and is charged by your financial institution for a transaction made at an ATM that they don't own.
How can I join SUM?
Access to surcharge-free SUM ATMs is available to customers of financial institutions that have joined the SUM Program. Membership is open to all financial institutions that are part of the NYCE Network. To see if your bank or credit union is a member of SUM, click here.
Do I need a special SUM ATM card?

If a financial institution belongs to SUM, can I use all of their ATMs surcharge-free?
SUM Program participants designate which of their ATMs they would like to include in the SUM Program. They are not required to include all of them. To be sure you are using a SUM ATM, look for the SUM logo on the ATM, or click here to locate a SUM ATM near you.
Can my financial institution charge me a fee for using a SUM ATM?
Your financial institution can charge you a service fee for using another institution's ATM, SUM or not. A charge that appears only on your statement of account, and not on your ATM receipt, is a service fee imposed by your financial institution for a transaction made at an ATM that they don't own.
A charge that appears on your ATM receipt when you perform a transaction is a surcharge by the ATM owner. This is the charge you avoid by using SUM ATMs.
